Apply for Unemployment Benefits in the Netherlands (WW-uitkering): A Step-by-Step Guide

Losing your job can feel overwhelming, especially when you live abroad. Thankfully, employees in the Netherlands are protected by law and can receive unemployment benefits (WW-uitkering) through the Dutch Employee Insurance Agency (UWV). These benefits provide financial support while you look for your next opportunity.

This guide explains, step by step, how to apply for unemployment benefits in the Netherlands, who is eligible, and how to make the most of your application process.

Understanding Unemployment Benefits in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, unemployment benefits are part of the national social security system. Nearly every working person contributes to this fund through monthly payroll deductions. The programme, known as WW-uitkering, helps individuals who lose their jobs for reasons beyond their control.

To qualify for unemployment benefits, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You are between 18 years old and the Dutch pension age.
  • You hold a valid residence permit (for example, a highly skilled migrant visa or European Blue Card).
  • You lost your job for reasons that were not your fault.
  • You worked at least 26 of the last 36 weeks before unemployment.
  • You live in the Netherlands while receiving unemployment payments.
  • You are immediately available and actively looking for work.

If you meet these conditions, you can start your application process one week before your final working day.

Step 1: Log in Online One Week Before Your Last Working Day for Unemployment Benefits

You can apply for unemployment benefits up to one week before your employment contract officially ends. You need to apply early to ensure that you will receive the full amount of the benefit from your final working day.

The application can only be submitted online via the UWV portal or Werk.nl. If you apply later than one week after your last working day, your benefits may be delayed. In such cases, you must contact the UWV directly to explain why your application was late.

Step 2: Provide Details About Your Employment Situation to get Unemployment Benefits

During the online application, you will need to provide key details about your employment and why it ended. You’ll also confirm whether you are receiving other UWV benefits, such as sickness or injury payments.

You’ll need to specify:

  • The type of contract you had (temporary, on-call, or permanent).
  • The number of hours you worked weekly.
  • The official date your unemployment begins.

This information ensures your application accurately reflects your employment history and situation.

Step 3: Verify and Confirm Your Information

Next, you’ll review your employer’s details and salary information registered with the UWV. This step helps the UWV confirm your eligibility and calculate your benefit amount.

The Dutch government sets a limit on how much you can receive in unemployment benefits, based on the maximum daily wage. In 2025, this amount is indexed, and from 1 July 2025, the maximum daily wage is €297.82 gross per day. To calculate the monthly benefit, multiply this daily amount by the average number of working days per month (21.75), resulting in a maximum gross monthly wage of €6,477.59.

You can estimate your expected amount using the UWV’s online calculator (available in Dutch). After submitting your application, the UWV will schedule an interview with a caseworker. You’ll need to bring documents such as your employment contract and final payslip to verify your information.

Step 5: Submit Your First Income Statement

Once they approve your unemployment benefits, you must submit an income statement at the end of every month. This document confirms whether you received any other income during that period. The UWV processes payments are only after they receive your income statement.

If you need immediate financial support, you can contact the UWV to request an advance payment. Generally, the first benefit payment arrives within 14 days after your income statement submission.
