Embracing Diversity in the Workplace: Mitigating Bias through Inclusion

In today’s fast-paced business world, organisations are constantly searching for innovative ways to stay ahead. One of the most impactful strategies for achieving this is embracing diversity in the workplace as a core company value. Diversity and inclusion at work go far beyond meeting HR requirements; they foster creativity, drive innovation, and strengthen long-term success.

At Octagon, we believe that promoting diversity starts with understanding and mitigating bias. That’s why our Resource Manager, Naomi, joined the BIAS Project hosted by Leiden University, proudly funded by the EU, to explore how Artificial Intelligence can support Human Resources in mitigating bias at work.

How Diversity in the Workplace Drive Positive Change

Bias refers to a predisposition or unfair judgement towards a particular individual or group. One of our key goals as a company is to eliminate bias and create diversity and inclusion at work for all employees. When the BIAS Project first emerged, Naomi took the initiative to represent us and contribute to this important discussion.

The initial workshop offered an engaging and interactive platform where she could share her insights and learn from others. Reflecting on her experience, Naomi shared:

“Although the people at the workshop thanked me for my contribution, I feel I gained far more than I offered. That’s why I keep doing it.”

Her words perfectly capture our philosophy, true diversity and inclusion at work involve continuous learning, listening, and collaboration.

Building an Inclusive Future with the BIAS Project

A few weeks later, we joined the second phase of the BIAS Project. This time, the participation grew stronger, with more of our team members involved, including Naomi, myself (a proud D&I enthusiast), and Danylo, our tech expert. The workshop atmosphere felt warm, inclusive, and purpose-driven, with everyone united in tackling bias at its roots.

Together, we explored how bias appears in recruitment processes and, as a result, brainstormed strategies to create fairer and more effective systems. Furthermore, our discussions led to innovative ideas for AI-driven tools that could help HR teams identify and reduce bias, thereby ensuring equal opportunities for every candidate. Finally the energy in the room reflected a genuine commitment to progress and collaboration, making it an inspiring example of diversity in the workplace in action.

Learning from Diversity in the Workplace to Grow Together

As we left the workshop, we carried with us new knowledge and insights and a deeper appreciation of diverse perspectives. The participants came from a wide range of backgrounds, people with disabilities, various genders, and different sexual orientations. Each of them contributing unique experiences that enriched the discussion.

Listening to their stories was a humbling reminder of why diversity and inclusion at work matter so much. Every perspective adds value, and every shared experience helps us grow. These learnings will continue to shape how we at Octagon build an even more inclusive, understanding, and supportive workplace for everyone.
